A Virgin Among the Living Dead (1973): Soundtrack

A Virgin Among the Living Dead is an French horror film directed by grindhouse/exploitation king Jesus Franco. Despite it having ‘living dead’ in the title, this isn’t really a zombie film, and the film follows a girl who returns to an old castle for the reading of her father’s will – but things aren’t what they seem and she gets caught up in all manner of witchcraft and the occult, which usually results in death and/or nudity in this film.

The soundtrack was composed by Bruno Nicolai, and it’s a great composition full of discordant and eerie sounds, with layers of echo. There are also beautiful melodies and more romantic sounding pieces in the soundtrack.

Bruno Nicolai was an Italian composer, who was probably best known for conducting the soundtracks written and composed by Ennio Morricone (he would also go on to co-score a few films with Morricone).

The Soundtrack:

Morricone’s influence clearly rubbed off on Nicolai over the years, as the soundtrack for A Virgin Among the Living Dead could easily pass for a Morricone soundtrack, and it’s a real shame that to this day, Nicolai often remains in Morricone’s shadow and doesn’t get the recognition he deserves.

The soundtrack is a wide blend of styles that range from doom-laden synthesizer tracks, romantic pieces, and weird and unsettling pieces that create a dense atmosphere.

Bruno Nicolai also enlisted the services of Edda Dell’Orso for this soundtrack, who provides some of the breathy and wordless vocals in some of the tracks that add to the mystery and otherworldly feeling of the soundtrack – her voice becoming an instrument in it own right. Edda Dell’Orso was also a regular collaborator with Ennio Morricone and featured on a number of his most famous soundtracks, including “A Fistful of Dollars“, “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly“, and “Once Upon A Time In The West“.
